Is It Time to Replace Your Forklift Tires?

23 Feb, 2024 | industrial tires | Return|

When operating heavy industrial vehicles, such as forklifts, it's important to frequently inspect and maintain their tires. Industrial tires take even more wear and tear than those on commercial vehicles. For example, forklifts typically have no suspension system, so the entire weight of the vehicle -and its loads - will rest directly on the tires. This means the tires may be directly supporting 15,000 pounds or more, leading to them wearing out with time and use.

Worn, cracked, or chunked forklift tires are dangerous. They may make the vehicle unstable or prone to rollover. They also make the ride more difficult for the operator, increasing fatigue over time. Regular tire inspections are vital to maintain forklift safety, so any operator should know the signs that industrial tires should be replaced.

I. Major Signs of Industrial Tire Damage

If you see any of the following red flags, it means you should replace your industrial tires soon, as they are becoming dangerous.

1. Chunking or Tearing

When tires are degraded or have become too old, they tend to crack and come off in big chunks. This leaves the tires misshapen, leading to uneven travel and a high chance of tipping over.

2. Worn beyond the wear line

Industrial tires are intended to simply wear down over time, similar to racing tires. Most brands include a clear line on the side of the tire indicating when the tire is at half or less of its original diameter. This is the sign they need to be replaced soon.

3. Flat spots

The tires should be basically round, and ideally wear down evenly all around. However, wear patterns can be affected by use - such as stopping abruptly or being allowed to sit unmoving while holding a heavy load for long periods. If the tires have flat spots, they've become unsafe.

II. Cushion Tires vs Pneumatic Tires

The two most common types of industrial tire are cushion and pneumatic. Each has its own issues to be aware of.

Cushion tires are designed for indoor use on concrete or similar surfaces. They should not be run outdoors on rough ground, or it will quickly wreck the tires. Watch out for uneven wear in particular, as these tires tend to be prone to chunking and tearing.

Pneumatic tires are intended for outdoor use, with harder rubber and better grip. Solid-style pneumatic tires are made entirely of rubber, making them more expensive than air-filled models, but they also last longer in difficult usage situations. For these, it's extra important to keep an eye on the tread and replace them once the tread wears off.
