Steel Rims vs Aluminum Alloy Rims - Which is Better for You?

04 Mar, 2024 | wheel change | Return|

When you're looking at a wheel change, you have many options. By understanding which rims will be better for your particular driving needs, you can narrow down your search for new rims. New wheels aren't merely an aesthetic element, they can make subtle changes to the performance and handling of your vehicle. In particular, when you're choosing between steel and aluminum alloy rims, you should be aware of their pros and cons!

I. Steel Wheels

Steel rims are the default standard, and it's easy to see why. They're inexpensive and extremely durable. Steel wheels are very hard to damage, even in a direct impact. Buying steel rims can make a wheel change much less costly while lasting longer than alternatives.

However, there are a couple of things to be aware of:

1 - They need their coating.

Steel can rust, and most steel rims rely on a layer of paint or other finish to protect them from the elements. You need to keep an eye on the finish and re-paint them whenever it's damaged, otherwise, they can rust.

2 - Steel is heavy.

This is both a con and a pro. On the bad side, steel being heavy adds to the weight of your vehicle and may cause your fuel efficiency to suffer because of it. The extra weight will also slightly lower the center of balance of your vehicle, which could potentially make it handle a bit worse.

However, that heaviness is a benefit if you do a lot of driving in cold weather, because it will add traction in ice and snow.

II. Aluminum Alloy Wheels

The other popular option for a wheel change is aluminum alloy. Aluminum is a stylish option for people who want rims that really pop and draw eyes. Plus, aluminum cannot corrode, so you don't have to worry about them rusting.

Aluminum alloy rims are also considerably less heavy than steel rims - which, again, is both a pro and a con. The light weight reduces the weight of your vehicle and improves handling. However, aluminum wheels are much easier to damage than steel. They can pick up cosmetic damage easily and will likely be ruined by a direct impact.

In addition, aluminum alloy is more expensive than steel rims, potentially adding 50% or more to the cost of your wheel change. In other words, you'll be paying extra for the nice look of aluminum, and you'll need to be very careful with them for the best lifespan.
