The 7 Key Parts of a Truck Tire: An In-Depth Guide

01 Jul, 2024 | industrial tires | Return|

When it comes to tires, there’s a big difference between the average vehicle tire and the industrial tires used by commercial trucks and logistics companies. Several crucial parts go into the making of a quality truck tire and each is integral to its performance.

That’s why the team of experts from Wheel & Tire Superstore has collected this helpful guide for you here.

  1. The Inner Liner: The tire’s inner liner serves as a barrier to maintain air pressure. Crafted from a specialized synthetic rubber blend, this layer accounts for a large portion of today’s modern commercial truck tires to ensure they remain durable.
  2. Carcass: Encompassing the inner liner, the carcass forms a sturdy framework with cords to preserve the tire's shape under compression from heavy loads. It plays a vital part in determining optimal tire pressure and the maximum load capacity each tire can bear.
  3. Bead: This component is a blending of wire, steel, and rubber used to secure the tire firmly to the rim and boost its structural integrity. This component also reinforces the tire's shape, contributing to overall stability and a smoother ride.
  4. Sidewall: Essential for protection, the sidewall is designed with flexible, crack-resistant rubber to shield the carcass and inner liner from wear and tear. Positioned between the bead and the outer tread, it safeguards the tire's core components.
  5. Belts/Breakers: Fabricated from steel cords embedded in rubber, belts link the tread to the carcass, enhancing structural cohesion and resilience against punctures. Their primary function is to securely bind the tire's layers together.
  6. Undertread: Made from a blend of synthetic and natural rubber, the undertread helps heat dissipate while the truck is on the road and serves as a bonding surface for the retreading and rubber applications essential for tire maintenance and longevity.
  7. Tread: As the outermost layer, the tread makes direct contact with the surface of the road. Designed from a mix of natural and synthetic rubber, the tread offers the traction, durability, and resilience crucial for safe and efficient truck operation.
